With vast state lands and an abundance of favorite targets like deer, turkey, pheasant, grouse and bear, Central New York aims to please hunters.

Much of the 184,500-plus acres of state forests and preserves here are hunt-able and open to fishing as well. With that much space and more than 100 areas to choose from, you’re sure to find the solitude necessary to bag an eight-pointer or take home a turkey dinner.

Some 63,700 of those acres are within the borders of rural Chenango County, home to 32 state lands. The 6,353-acre Five Streams State Forest and 5,816-acre Beaver Meadow offer plenty of space for hunting and trapping.

The rolling hills of the 3,737-acre Tioughnioga Wildlife Management Area in Madison County make it a great spot to take whitetail deer, turkey and grouse.

The 2,000-acre Rural Grove State Forest in Montgomery County boasts good numbers of white-tail deer as well as beaver, muskrat, fox and coyote during their respective trapping seasons.

That’s just a sample of the beautiful landscapes of Central New York. Hunting is a great way to experience our great outdoors.
