Stories come alive when experienced in the places where they happened. Across Oneida, Madison, and Schoharie counties, history isn’t just remembered—it’s preserved, celebrated, and waiting to be discovered. From fortified frontier towns and utopian experiments to canal boatyards and historic estates, Central New York’s past is deeply rooted and surprisingly accessible.

History feels alive at Fort Stanwix, a reconstructed 18th-century fort where soldiers once stood their ground during the American Revolution. Explore interactive exhibits, archaeological finds, and interpretive programs that reveal how this outpost earned the title “the fort that never surrendered.” Whether you’re joining a ranger-led tour or taking it all in at your own pace, there’s something powerful about walking the same grounds that helped turn the tide of a nation.

Oneida County History Center

Stories here go beyond textbooks. The Oneida County History Center brings the region’s social, political, and cultural history into focus through rotating exhibits and community-driven collections. Learn about lesser-known figures like Lucy Carlile Watson (suffragist), discover how the area’s people played a major role in the Underground Railroad, and learn about the newspaper that helped redefine national journalism. It’s a place where local stories echo far beyond county lines.

Day three - Frontier History & Living Landscapes

2022 SchoCo Fall- Old Stone Fort-Actors Waving

Schoharie County

Old Stone Fort Museum

Built as a church in 1772, and fortified during the Revolutionary War, the Old Stone Fort still bears a British cannonball hole in its thick stone walls. Today, it anchors a seven-building complex that tells more than 300 years of Schoharie County history. Exhibits range from Indigenous artifacts to early industry and rural craftsmanship, offering a well-rounded and locally rooted look at life on the frontier. With peaceful grounds and stories that span generations, it’s easy to spend a whole morning exploring.

The Breadbasket of the Revolution

As you travel through the Schoharie Valley, it’s hard to miss the wide, fertile farmland stretching in every direction. During the American Revolution, this region was so agriculturally rich that it earned the nickname “The Breadbasket of the Revolution.” Schoharie’s fields provided much of the grain and provisions that sustained Continental Army troops. Today, that legacy lives on with working farms, roadside markets, and seasonal harvest events that celebrate the valley’s ongoing role in New York’s food story. This rich agricultural heritage adds a meaningful layer to any visit to the area.
